Until recently, things like the police being inept and incompetent were news that I heard from others. All of this changed yesterday when I was subject to a very unpleasant encounter with the police.

I was returning home from office and was on my usual route. Close to home, a police jeep comes on the wrong side of the road and blocks my way and starts abusing me that I was on the way. I have been living in this locality for the past 15 years and this road was never a one way. The exchange got a little heated and the constable started hurling abusive language at me. I laughed it off and headed home. As was going I realized that the behavior of the constable was unacceptable and something needs to be done about it. I turned around and headed back to the police station to make a complaint. What followed was shocking.

The inspector incharge (S S Kashi) accused me of being arrogant and instead of making a note, registered a complaint against me for obstruction of justice. While I refused to sign on the written document given by him, he threatened me that if I did not comply, he would arrest me. The irony of the whole episode was that even Mr Kashi was foulmouthed and just as guilty as his constable.

The whole episode makes me ponder on one question "Who polices the police?"

Getting a Job!

There was a time when people went from one office to another looking for a job. Government jobs were the 'in' thing. Things have changed these days. People have the luxury of staying back at home and finding jobs at the click of a button. Want a hearty laugh....go read a resume! Here are some things that I had come across in a few of them

One said "College topper in: Business Ethics".... thank god he dint mention he was runner up in sack race!

Another said "Prior work exp: One month and 12 days ".....I wonder why he dint mention how many hours he worked too. Looking at his attention to detail, he should be a Janitor!

Another set of Individual have this tendency to write in resumes what they intend to do in the futur...like this one who said "Certifications: planning to do CFA & FRM(Already got prospectus)"

Typos are a real big source of fun. For instance one lady mentioned this on her resume "Career break in 2001 to renovate my 'horse'"

Social service constitute a good part of the resume these days. One gentleman mentions "Voluntary work: taking care of elderly and vegetable people"

When we talk about penning a resume, some people just go by the flow "Skills: Strong work ethic, attention to detail, good communicator, team player, self motivated, attention to detail" this resume just got lengthier by one line!

Not always do email addresses match the candidate's name. A few queer email IDs that I have come across: cooldude69, blackbeautywithatwist, youragony. One guy however had a very good reason too; it said 'ihatemyname'.

Job changes often have a hidden motive. Some people give it away easily, for instance one resume stated "married, three children, prefer frequent travel"

Putting thoughts in words is too tough, isn't it? "Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining composer"

Team work reaches a new level altogether "I can play well with others"

And then there are others who have rare skills. One resume mentioned this on the resume: "Dealing with customer conflicts that arouse"

Next time you get hold of a resume, make sure you read it....and read it well! Or maybe be relook at your own!

Why do you love?

Why do we love anyone? Strange Question to ask; isn't it? Do a little introspection, and you will know why! We all have different reasons to love. What if we did not have any reason to love? Does love even have a reason?

Well, I am of the thought that love needs no reason. Here is why...

It is said that love is not selfish. But hey, most of the places I see, there is selfishness. Now, when you have a reason to love somebody, that underlying reason makes it selfish and it is not love anymore. Lets look at some instances. A newly wed couple would claim they are in love. If it was an arranged marriage, I 'm sure there is lengthy process of background checks, people look at how much the groom earns, how much dowry does the Groom expect and so on. At every step there was a reason, the whole relationship was selfish. Where is the love?

Now lets consider love when two people are "in love" (which I sure don't agree with). She likes him because... He is smart, he is rich, he is intelligent, he is lovable, he is "my type", he makes me feel good, he is fun. He likes her because... She is adorable, she is beautiful, she is caring, she is a good girl, she is "my type", she is good at heart. Here again, the motive is selfish. What if your partner is not all of the above. It will all go one day. So, if a He states that "I love you because you are the most beautiful girl I have ever met", then it would mean that the moment he finds a better looking girl his love is gone. This would apply to all the reasons one would give when you say "I love you".

What is true love then? I believe that true love needs no reason. Love is unselfish and unconditional. Love with a reason is no love at all. Picture this, two people in love and they are not bound by conditions. They enjoy their love for each other. For them their love is not narrow. This love would last a lifetime.

Next time you feel you are in love, ask yourself this question. Why do you love someone so much? If you don't have a definite reason and still love that person...be sure, Its love!

Bourse Talk

"Hey man, Sensex is up again, stock X had great intrinsic value, should have bought em when they were undervalued"

Typically what we hear from our all knowing stock market enthusiasts. A few years back, when I had no clue what the stock markets were and how they make money, I used to wonder "who the hell is putting the numbers, people are buying what? I always looked in awe when someone spoke about stocks. Years later, when i really know how all this works, I came to the following conclusion:

Bull market: A random market movement causing an investor to think himself as a financial genius!

Stock market: A place where people make money by buying and selling nothing.(stock certificates are a thing of the past)

Speculator: Someone who got lucky (pretty often)

Investor: The guy who always wonders why he made less money than a speculator.

Bear Market: A frequent reminder that nothing is permanent!

Share Holder: A person who wanted to own a company, but never could afford one.

Shares: A proof that proves nothing.

Mutual Funds: An instrument that doesn't make the holder feel like a lone loser! You got company.

Market Crash: Hasha....pushaa....we all fall down.

Well, this is in simple words what happens in a stock market. Fact is very few people understand it; and the people who do think "what the hell?"

The older the better!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5BITR8pis_0/SwQGEOFV1NI/AAAAAAAAC2U/7DeQtj7aBD4/s320/sachin.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405452122321179858" />
How would it be carrying a billion expectations on your shoulders? Pretty tough I guess! Every time I walked into the crease with hardly a dozen people watching in the pavilion (mostly team mates), there would still be a lot of butterflies in my stomach. I can just imagine how it would be in a stadium filled with thousands of people vouching for you. Only a couple of days back I saw a man do just that for 20 years in a row.

I, probably am not the greatest fan sachin ever had, nevertheless, i have reasons to believe that in my own right, I was. When i was much younger, I dreamt of being a tendulkar one day. Over the years the thought vanished....and i was content being a normal human being. Man.... just the thought of playing the game for 2 decades....wow.

It wasn't plain sailing though for the great man. Sometimes its the media, sometimes it was the fans (who are more like fanatics) who wrote him off, only to see him fight back harder and reclaim his position. If there has been a sportsman who has conducted himself in a manner worthy of being noted, it is sachin. Some may argue Federer is, but i think his temper is far ahead to that of sachins'.

The 174 against australia was a scene to witness. No matter who, all would agree that it was poetry in motion. I only wish the great man...."Its been a pleasure watching you play; Tell me there is more in the reckoning"

The Maya Jaal

Democracy! I wonder what the whole of UP was thinking while voting for maya. Apparently most of the state funds are spent on her self-glorification. A court filing was pending and the park with various statues of her and her goon friends were on display. While a huge number of people are suffering in dire poverty, maya finds joy in unveiling her statues.
And this certainly wasn’t her first splurging spree. Her birthdays have made it to the news too. And look at the coincidence here even UP is rules by a crazy woman.

We give positions of power to people in half wits and expect them to do us good. Maya is just one in the bandwagon of many jerks in our country. Whats more it did so in style under the leadership of "namma bengaluru huduga" Anil Kumble.

well, while bangaloreans made merry, teams like Kolkata had a lot to worry about. Sharukh khan may hav to reconsider his decision to own a team. Maybe, as a result of his team, no one may turn up to watch his flicks. Anyway, I have a list of things you must do as the mercury rises. Here it goes :

Go, Get a haircut! Guys....this is a must do....your ex-dhoni hairdo is a strict no no!

Girls....u too must try it (specially for the adventurous ones). it feels great when you feel the breeze brushing through your scalp!

People who are Naturally 'hairless', never mind.....this section doesn't apply to you!

Eat ice...trust me its the best way to beat the heat...although you might have to visit your dentist pretty soon.

Swimmers, non-swimmers....hit the pool. Try going to the deepest corner...then swim halfway to the middle and stop kicking. For those of you who don't know swimming, even better....just jump anywhere....you might still drown!

Go to the roadside vendor and have 5 GOLAs in a row....try different flavours...Make sure you brush your teeth after that....those colours can be pretty hard to remove!

Put off your fan, sleep with 3 blankets on.....you will conserve Power.

Try Bungee Jumping....just another way of cooling you down...

Wear fancy sunglasses...like the one Rajinikant wore in his films.....the ones with heart shapes, pink rims, fluorescent green shades etc. Wear them in the night too....

Spend a day at the cold storage....there will be plenty of animals for your company.

Wear a sweater, muffler and a monkey cap for Lunch....top it up with a woolen overcoat....be sure you will burn a lot of calories!

Walk aimlessly.....if you have a lot of free time...which I 'm sure most of you do, go on a walk....keep your pockets empty.....cellphones and money can be a big distraction for a lift back home. Keep walking......

Have an early morning cold water bath....it will keep you fresh throughout the day! If it is too hot....have bath every hour till you sleep....make sure you aren't using public water, dig your own well for this.

When you feel that the heat is irresistible, have cold meals...i.e. cold rice, cold tea, cold chicken, cold dosa, cold roti, cold dal, cold pizza.....u just said the heat is irresistible!

And Finally, as I said...go Dance in the rain. Make sure you keep off the manholes; or else the next time we see you could be in the newspapers!

P.S. All the above acts must not be performed alone. Have someone along for moral support and supervision!

Cut, Copy & Paste

Plagiarism, a very sophisticated word given to the cut, copy, paste phenomenon. Earlier, even plagiarism needed effort as we had to write. But with the advent of computers, its gotten much easier. All we do is select, cut, copy and paste! Hey but what triggered me to post my views on plagiarism??? It was a mail which said everybody to stop sending blog posts that were copied from elsewhere!!! I guess it was the need of the hour.

Hey, but that brings us to the all elusive question, weather to be a hard working blogger or a smart blogger....obviously many of us take fast track...but does it pay off? I do not think so! A smart blogger always thinks the person on the other end is dumber than him....which is a good thing if the other person actually is dumb, which is not the case very often.

When it comes to staling an original article, i am reminded of one of my school teachers. We were reading the Daffodils by Wordsworth and the chap reading it misread one of the lines. The teacher promptly stopped him and said, "poor Wordsworth would have put in so much labour pains in creating this masterpiece and you are trying to modify it!" The incident shows us that a few things are always better off in their original form. No amount of change can bring in the charm of an original.

A Blog is a diary where you pen your thoughts....at least don't copy others' thoughts!!!

Poll Position

As India braces itself for polls lets look at how rational we are at voting for the right people. As Indians, we have a lot of pride in flaunting our nationality. But, when it comes to voting, we are far behind. Ask a novice and he would reply that he does not beleive the voting system in the country. Ask another and he would say, give me a bottle of whisky and I would vote for anybody. In a distant country called America, people voted for change, here in india, we vote for no change. Basically, our society despises change.....and that is evident from the way religion is thrown in the ring like a football and kicked around by vagabonds. While on one hand we have fools who claim that they are saviors of the Indian culture, on the other hand we have bigger fools who claim they are saviors of country itself; all this when there are a countless attacks on the country by people within the country; sometimes in the name of religion and sometimes as terrorism.

We have heard the statement "this is a era of coalition governments". The political parties stoop to such an extent, that they would put Cleopatra to shame. Parties which were once considered enemies, get together like a script straight from Bollywood. Archrivals become best buddies. And in the midst of all this, money changes hands like a parallel banking system. We have had PMs who haven't even lasted a fortnight and we call ourselves the biggest democracy in the world. Democracy has become an object that the citizens of the country use to claim their rights but wouldnt make any attempts to follow their duties.

A popular TV commercial "Jaago Re" shows us how the youth needs to respond to elections and vote responsibly. However, I am sure it looks good on celluloid, but ground realities show us a different picture. Invarably, there will be people who say "I wanted to vote, but I did not have an election card", "All are equally corrupt, there is no point voting", "No time dude", "I have more productive work to do", "I dont beleive in Democracy", "I dont pay tax, u expect me to vote"..............and so on.

But at the end of the day......these are like excuses one would give in a school for missing classes! At the end of the day Democracy is of the people, by the people, for the people!!!

Go Jump

New Zealand is one place I have to visit someday. I mean in a sense that beats all senses. Computers have the problem of overheating and thereby shutting itself, unfortunately we humans don't! Take the example of trying to understand a complicated scientific theory from Einstein. I am sure most of us wouldn't understand a thing. And the people who claim they have understood are lying.
Nevertheless, there was one instance where I found that thinking too much was good. I have heard this story from many people, and each time I heard a new version. Let me give u a breif outline:" Once an atheist science professor comes to the class and questions the students of the class about the validity of God. He makes strong statements which would even make a god fearing person a non beleiver. The strongest point he makes he makes is that of god existed, there needed to be some proof. Can anyone touch God, See God and so on.......the class is stunned in silence. Suddenly one student raises his hand. The professor is happy as he thinks his theory was foolproof. The student says "Sir, you dont have brains!!!" The professor is taken aback, recomposing himself he says "what do you mean?" The student now gets all the attention from the class and he continues, "Sir, if you had brains, there must be some conclusive proof. Can you touch your brain? Can you hear your brain? Can you feel your brain? If you still claim you have brains, then how can you say God does not exist? The whole class erupts into a thunder of applause.......truly this chap deserved it.

I have no clue who the person was, but had I thought so much, my brain would have one numb!!! Studies claim that we only use a small part of our intelligence......so true considering Edison never had formal education. As they say "i was born intelligent, education ruined me"

Anything for publicity!

The recent mangalore attacks by the Sri Rama Sene gives us a glimpse of how cheap our politicians will get to gain publicity. What is worse, the head of the lunatic group admits it and thanks the media for giving his party the much needed publicity. As it is said "make hay while the sun shines", now the party claims it will disrupt the Valentines day celebration. The method they plan to use: forcibly marry people who are dating........that in a way saves the couple some trouble. No one has to propose to the other!!! After all why do people date!
For once the Sri Rama Sena is proving themselves........after all Lord Rama's army had MONKEYS. Oops....wrong.....those monkeys respected women.....these don't.

One piece of advise for the hooligans.....Grow up guys....and stop tarnishing the religions to gain petty publicity.

Astrology: creativity at its best!

Astrology has been around for ages now and I really wonder where it all began. In fact, who says time traveling isn't possible. Visit an astrologer today and he will take you on a joyride to the past and future and guess what you will believe every word of it!!!

I'm no maverick in astrology, but the whole concept amazes me and I find it funny to an extent. The reason: You go to an unknown person; in all probability he has a flowing white beard, he speaks funny things and makes funny gestures and looks like a character straight from stone age.; He then will ask about your name, your birthday, birthmark, birthplace etc. After all these he'll show you glimpses of your astronomy textbooks (which you may have missed studying in your school) and finally tell you fantasies about your future. Not to mention your pockets are ripped before you are out of his 'abode'.

Adding to all the drama, you have multiple disciplines in astrology. There is a Chinese astrology, Indian astrology and all other existing countries. In India you have an astrologer in every street. Each claiming that their predictions are much better and 'beware of imitators'. Many are of the opinion that a person who does not find a job has a Plan B : Astrology/palmistry.

Palmistry is popular even in the working classes. There is ample literature on palmistry and everyone who's read a couple of books can read your palm. Professional palm readers have business cards that can put a qualified professional's business card to shame!

But, we have to give it to them that they give people hope (although it could be false hope). It is probably very unscientific too but who cares........I believe in astrology and palmistry and so do you!!!

'Test'ing times

We all hate exams, don't we? I am no exceptions to this and I am being quite vociferous about it. When every new course starts, the first thing i do is count the number of exams I have to write. Nevertheless the number of exams I write have come down over the years.

When I was in my 10th grade, my dad used to say, "do this exam well and you can enjoy the rest of your college life". Its been 6 years since and he still says the same things. I have to say the law of diminishing marginal utility has come to play. After the 10th, it was 12th. It felt like being tied with a tether and being told, "go, you may go as far as you want". It was a never ending cycle of exams after exams. Sometimes a class test and sometimes a preparatory exam. By the time final exams come, I used to be so tired of exams that the sense of purpose is totally lost.

But that was still early days. I had to write the all important CAT. And guess what, I voluntarily took the trouble of enrolling into a tutorial. It easily broke all my previous record for preparatory exams put together. On D day, the questions were as Greek and Latin to me as they were to me before I enrolled to the tutorial. Nevertheless the law of averages caught up with me and I did pretty okay. Many students across the nation had similar horrors and I benefited.

The saga of writing exams continues and it doesnt seem like there is going to be any respite. Good night. I have an exam tomorrow!!!

The art of 'Slang'ing

We all love our slang, don't we? I had once traveled west and in my conversations with the taxi driver, I discovered how is still there for me to learn! We were discussing Kebabs and he suddenly said, "Aap kya Khaate? bade ka ya chote ka? I was taken aback, not knowing how to respond. Weather to accept my ignorance or fake knowledge. I did the wise thing, I asked him "ye bada-chota kya hai". He then explained that by Bada he meant Cow meat and Chota meant Goat meat. Huh! safe I clarified. Had I chosen an option I would have had either of those animals for dinner that day. (clarification: I don't eat either of those animals)

Hey, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. There is such progress in these slangs that it is difficult to catch up. We generally use the terminology 'lol' quite frequently. Some of the people whom I have interacted with have no clue what it is. When that happens all I end up doing is share some GYAN(wow impact, that was a slang). The Slang has progressed to such an extent that today there are slang dictionaries and encyclopedia. Wonder whats in them.

let me try to decipher a few of them:

Fitting- Complain behind one's back (usage- yen amma, FITTING it bittiya?)
Ticket- In the death bed (usage- Looks like he might take the TICKET anytime now)
Gyan- explain something boring(usage- now he'll start giving GYAN about himself)
ROTFL- Rolling on the floor laughing( good one! ROTFL!)
Ganga Jal- Alchohol (usage- join us for some late evening GANGA JAL)

There are many more things which are way too complicated, for more GYAN log on to Google and search SLANG in any language you want. You will find a million pages!

Of Mathematics and equations

From my childhood, if there is one subject I have dreaded and loved equally, it has gotta be Mathematics. I m sure many of us fall in the same bracket as I do. In my schooling probably I spent a fair bit of my time in the maths special class(specially for the math illiterates). Somehow it seemed to be one subject that wasn't made for me. The lovely affair between maths and me still continues.....
Hey, but there were bits when I felt maths was good too. Specially in the Geometry classes when I had to explore my all important Geometry Box. There was a fun factor filled using the compass, divider, protractor and the 2 triangles(I forgot in what they are called). At least there were somethings which we did not have to prove. Math was all about proving and disproving. There were questions which said

(sinx) / (1+cosx) = tan(x/2) prove LHS=RHS
My answer always would be : "how the hell am I suppose to know." It has been years and I still fail to understand why it is important. What am I going to achieve by proving that LHS=RHS.
To add to my woes, there came "Probability". It is defined as the chance of an event happening!!!!
lol
All i could do while I learnt this subject was gape in awe at the magnitude of what we were doing. At times I asked a few professors, "Sir, why do we do this, Give me a practical example where such abstract sciences has really been of help in making Business Decisions." Surprisingly, I did get some replies and to be honest they were 'as ridiculous as ridiculous can be'.
If there was ever a paper that I have comfortably completed before the bell goes off, it has always been Maths paper. That paper had been too simple for my complex brain. Often my answers lasted a few lines irrespective of how many marks they carried.
Years went by, governments came and fell, the economy went from boom to depression, 22 years went by, but my dreadful romance with mathematics continues(rather rages on).
Hopefully my Mathematics teachers don't read this post............I will be the one student they will be proud of........

Mumbai: lessons learnt and soon forgotten

In the wake of the recent mumbai blasts, there were many viewpoints put forward by the citizens of India. While many asked for a rejig of the political system, many wanted us, the citizens, to be more proactive. I was one of them. After the incident, I am not irritated by the constant check that I face in many places. I respect the neighbourhood policemen more than ever before. I believe that if the state of the nation has to change, it has to start from us.

I was today driving in the Jayanagar area of Bangalore. At a particular traffic junction, the red light was on,and while I promptly stopped my vehichle, I saw another vehichle moving ahead. A very practicle example of what I am talking about. We want a change but are not ready to make the change ourselves. We just talk the talk, never walk the talk.

I was very proud the way the country came forward to show their solidarity today. I was proud the way people were united for one cause. I was proud the way we came forward from various walks of life. I was proud the way we answered fanatics like Raj thakrey that while Mumbai bled, the whole of the nation was with them. It wasn't a cliched candlelight walk which is forgotten the very next day. While on most occasions we have seen that, we are all fired up the first day and the lessons are forgotten the next day. I hope that doesn't happen this time.

Very strangely, i came across a few pakistani news channels, which, instead of mending fences were trying to worsen the situation. There were reports that the attacks, like 9/11 was a handiwork of the Indian intelligence. This was very sad considering the situation which India was facing. Whie I have nothing against pakistan, I believe it is time they mature, and mature as Journalists, statesmen, world citizens, and most importantly as Human beings.

While a war of words has alredy risen between the two countries, there is a very good chance that this is going to get outrightly dirty. And for all we know Pakistan is going to be on the receiving end. Both countries are in the midst of an economic turmoil and the last thing they want is a war. Its time diplomacy takes over and better sense prevails in the region. While I say that, it is also very important that Pakistan takes stringent action aginst the terror camps operating in Pakistan or else there is every chance India could knock the daylights off that country. Then all we may know of Pakistan may be from the HISTORY books.

Mumbai 26/11: a change in perspective....

The terror attacks have torn apart Mumbai city yet again and all we could do as citizens was to see the horror unfold. I believe that now is the time to seriously introspect. Only a few months back we heard a jerk called Raj Thackeray voicing out concerns that Marathi manoos were not getting enough and that his so called brave Sena can change the situation in mumbai. Where was his great Sena when all this was happening. All that was done was by the commandos who called themselves INDIAN. I am sure he was sitting in a corner of his bungalow like a whimp looking at all that was happening.

Let me not spare the other politicians who are more interested in gaining mileage from the incident. The home minister resigned accepting 'moral responsibility'. Come to think of it I would rather call him a coward who is running away from responsibility. A responsible person would have taken stern actions such that another such incident dare not happen in the country. Manmohan singh is a misfit in this kind of situation. He lacks the conviction to fight terror (in at least the way he speaks). I saw his speech to the nation and it was disappointing. I believe it is time to allow professionals to handle the areas of national security and be given absolute anonymity in doing so.

This time it was the foreigners targeted and so the attack got international coverage. I m sure that if the incident did not involve these people, none would have bothered. There would be just another "We condemn the incident and our hearts go out to all the aggrieved families" statement and that would be it. It is such a shame that we as humans can be so naive when it comes to empathizing with others.

Now the way forward.........

The police was absolutely unprepared to combat a bunch of school kids. What is wrong with the country's security. The police is paid peanuts and asked to fight for the country. We have one jerk of a government which is even not ready raise the pay scales for the country's heroes. The equipment given to these forces are below par. Look at what the ATS chief Karkare was wearing when he was shot dead. Someone in one of the news channels even claimed that in a shooting range when the helmets were tested, there were holes made in it. Our politicians are given so much security, why??? People should be asking who is protecting the innocents .... Mayawati wants a Plane for herself and was sanctioned 55 crore for this. The NSG commandos had to be flown to mumbai but did not have a plane fast enough and hence the mission was delayed by 10 hours. Surprising.........!!!there is more. Then there are politicians that try gaining political mileage even from such gory incidents. Narendra modi had no business at the Tajmahal hotel when the operation was on, but he was present there. He was the same person who was questioning the integrity of Karkare a few days back, and now was hailing him as a hero. Once the Nariman house operation was over, there was another politician Munde there. What was he trying to do there??? searching for militants in the crowds???? opportunist!!!

How many terror attacks have we seen in the USA after9/11...nil. But look at India there have been attacks again an again as if it was a alarm clock on Snooze. We are still not bothered... Now is the time to ask Questions. What has our famed political done for us. Now that Shivraj pati has resigned, it is expected that Chidambaram will take over..........but I have a problem there...He is the same person who couldn't look after the finance ministry properly, how can he handle the home ministry??? For god's sake, Give me a break...

To the bravehearts, policemen and military personnel, we owe a lot to you. It is about time we have a system like Singapore where all individuals have compulsory military training. We never know when it may come of use to the nation.

To all the people of India, Vote to the right people. I am aware that most people standing in the fray are crooks, still there are individuals who have courage and conviction to speak in the best interest of the country.
